This week at Abingdon House School, we have celebrated School Diversity Week, a week promoted and supported by the charity ‘Just Like Us’. The purpose of the week was to promote respect, tolerance and equality for everyone, whilst also beginning to develop our older students’ understanding of LGBTQ+ issues.
The students took part in a range of activities over the week. Rainbow cupcakes were baked and decorated, equality posters and rainbow flags were lovingly created and guest speakers visited to talk about their experiences of being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
This week is all about our students and building on their often inspirational ability to empathise and care for others. At Abingdon, we want our students to be academically successful, but also be compassionate human beings who are prepared to go off into the world and make a positive contribution to society. Diversity week is about acceptance. Accepting that we are all different and, despite our differences, we all have the right to be happy, safe and loved.
