Message from the Principal

As Principal of Wetherby Group of Schools, it gives me great pleasure to provide this introduction to Abingdon House School.

In my career as an educationalist, which spans a period of twenty years (twelve of these as a Head teacher), I have a passionate belief in, and commitment to, the value, talent, and educational potential of all children; despite whatever premature judgement may have been made of them by the system in which we operate. It is for this reason that I chose to take my MA in the subject of Psychology and Special Educational Needs of Children.

Working within the highly competitive London Day School sector (in which the cream is expected to rise to the top), I have observed that the success of high achieving children is often based on their maturational development, rather than just the perceived excellence of their IQ. Many equally capable children, who may be less mature and in need of additional early educational support, can risk being overlooked, within a system, which understandably recognises and rewards outstanding achievement and success.

At Abingdon House we will work with children who may require a period of enhanced provision of specialist help and support. This will be set within an environment, which will design both the curriculum and its delivery, in a way that is appropriate to the development of each child's needs and requirements.

Supported by a team of highly trained teachers and therapists, and an “in house” Educational Psychologist, it is our intention to prepare children to enter, or return, to the established Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory school sector. We envisage that the majority of these children will be able to pursue their education within a traditional environment.

At Abingdon House School we provide a unique opportunity for the Development of those children who might otherwise falter in taking their first steps on the educational ladder. The educational environment is specifically tailored to each child's needs. Every child will be provided with its own individual learning programme. At Abingdon House School we are already seeing our pupils making great strides forwards.
